Choosing a Good Nursery

By Vanessa Richins, About.com

When you buy your trees and shrubs, make sure you are shopping at a reputable nursery. Here's what you should look for:

First Impressions Count

When you walk into a nursery, glance around. Does it look clean and inviting? Some soil on the ground is, of course, inevitable, but it should not be excessive. Do the plants look healthy? Are they clearly labeled?

Are the Associates Knowledgeable?

A good nursery will hire people who have gardening knowledge and will be able to answer any questions you may have. Look for nurseries that have state certified nurserymen; these employees have completed a certain number of hours and have passed a rigorous test to be certified.

Do the Pots Have Weeds?

Weeds are very good at competing for nutrients, light, and water, so the plant may be malnourished. Weeds can also have pests and diseases hiding on them. It is also a sign that the plants have been there for a long time.

Where Do the Plants Come From?

If plants have been grown in a different type of climate than you live in, they may have trouble flourishing when planted in your area. Ask the nursery where their plants come from - it is best when they come from a zone close to or the same as your zone.

Does the Nursery Belong to Any Trade Organizations?

This isn't necessary, but it means that the nursery is interested in following the latest news and trends in the garden industry.
