By

Definition:

When a plant is referred to as the type species, it means that it is the best example of the characteristics that are used to set that genus apart from others. It is often the original species found for which the genus was created and named.

Examples of trees and shrubs that are type species:

  • Monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana)
  • Oak trees - Quercus robur (English oak)
  • Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus)
  • Whiteheart hickory (Carya tomentosa)
