What Does Acicular Mean?

Question: What Does Acicular Mean?

If a leaf is acicular, it is shaped like a needle. This form evolved over time as a way for leaves to persist despite harsh conditions like colder temperatures. Since the leaves are so thin, it is less likely to collect snow and cause branches to break.

Many evergreen and deciduous conifers have foliage that is acicular, though others are shaped like straps, awls or scales.

Acicular can also be used to describe the shape of crystals.
