Mystery Monday - Name That Tree!
We had several winners for last week's Mystery Monday. Kate, Pat and Sarah all named it as a Schefflera. This specific one is the common houseplant Schefflera arboricola (extra points to Pat for the species). It's called Dwarf Umbrella Tree or Octopus Tree. I have a lovely variegated one at my house. Congrats!
Your clues for this week:
- Though it's not related to citrus, this is called a lime tree in Britain.
- In America, it's called by a name that includes a word that can be a musical instrument or a fish.
- These are highly perfumed when in bloom.
- I just found out tonight that the pale honey made from this tree has sedative qualities.
Good luck to you!

I know this one, it’s Linden, or Basswood. My local arboretum, just up the street has beautiful specimens.
Tilia Cordata. Linden. But what name is it called that is the same as a musical instrument or fish? That really stumped me.
Hi Folks,
Can anyone identify a tree that is growing rampantly here in Denver. It’s leaves look like a kind of palm tree leaves. It’s very invasive in that the seeds spread and new growth pops up all over a yard. It’s roots grow to invade just below the surface of the ground. It’s branches are interesting in that new ones are fragile and break easily, and they are green more like a bush rather than a deciduous or woody plant.
Any help or info would be appreciated.
Tilia or Lime or Linden Trees are blooming right now. They are are very fragrant and you can make some very good herbal tea with the blossoms.
