Be a Part of the Billion Tree Campaign
The original goal was one billion trees a year.
The Billion Tree Campaign is a program set up by the United Nations Environmental Programme. Their website says that "the idea for the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign was inspired by Professor Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize laureate for 2004 and founder of Kenya’s Green Belt Movement, which has planted more than 30 million trees in 12 African countries since 1977. " It is also sponsored under the direction of Prince Albert of Monaco.
Since it started in November 2006, 2,293,737,708 have been planted. I think that's wonderful! Trees do so much to improve our environments, whether it is creating more oxygen and purifying the air to simply making the world more beautiful.
The new goal of the Billion Tree Campaign is to plant 7,000,000 trees by the end of 2009. They currently have pledges made by people to plant 3,897,743,579 new trees.
Would you like to help them reach their goal? Register a pledge on their website. Once I can find the right place to plant some myself, I'll be pledging myself. I'd love to hear from people who sign up too!
