Plants with purple leaves provide a great contrast to the usual greens in your landscape. Purple smoke tree definitely fits the bill - not only do some cultivars have purple leaves, the shrub also has large smoky purple-pink "puffs" because of infertile flower clusters.
You can also train purple smoke bush as a standard for use as a tree. It will grow in Zones 4-9. If you live in these areas, be sure to check out the Shrub of the Week - purple smoke bush.

Do purple smoke bushes lose their leaves in the winter?
Yes, they lose their leaves in winter. I’ve also found they are a great contrast with yellow and orange.
I have two lovely purple smoke bushes in my front yard. My sister would like a clipping from this. How can I take a clipping and start a new one for her?
